WHAT IS HERITAGE:

Heritage architecture is a term that refers to buildings or structures of historical or cultural importance, which are a vital part of the country’s heritage and require conservation. This architecture comprises a large portion of the UK’s heritage sector. 

CULTURAL ASSET:

The phenomenon of expressing cultural identity in architecture is apparent in many parts of the world. It focuses on architects, and the strategies they use in expressing cultural identity, it depends a lot of time to religion and it can depend on the place where the building is ,because any country has her own culture . The aim is to understand their views and current efforts in this context.

WHY PRESERVING HERITAGE?

Preservation the heritage is a method of not loosing the value or the struccture of an ancient building . the most significant reason behind heritage preservation is to acknowledge a buildings’ historic importance and to keep it alive for future generations and we can also add some benefits that we can gain by preserving this heritage. like:

cultrural benefits: A building’s cultural significance leads on from the historic interest, and preservation serves to keep communities together, to see them remain true to their past and safeguard their future. In cases where historic preservation has been ignored, a community’s connection to the past is lost. Their foundation is removed and with it goes pride and a sense of belonging.

the economic benefits: Occasionally, heritage preservation is portrayed as being opposed to economic growth. But this is misleading. Conservation isn’t a waste of money. In fact, heritage preservation makes very sound economic sense. That’s because, unlike the new builds which may have replaced them, the preserved site increases the opportunities for tourism. 

and finally it can have some affects in the environment: To demolish a site and construct a new building isn’t as environmentally responsible as historic preservation. When a structure is removed, the old materials are discarded and new ones need to be sourced and transported to the site – which is a huge waste of resources, energy and time.

What do we have to preserve:

We must let the building show and explain its values and the the values of his generation.

CONSERVATION:

PRESERVATION: Historic preservation is the practice of protecting and preserving sites, structures or districts which reflect elements of local or national cultural, social, economic, political, archaeological or architectural history.

maintenance:Building maintenance includes cleaning common areas, removing trash regularly, and repairing items that are broken. It can involve inspecting, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems, heating and air conditioning systems, and other utility services.

consolidation:is the reinforcement of the structure or the reinforcement of the building fabric,and it consists to let it more stronger and more powerfulfor a long time.

REPAIRING:Building repairs and maintenance services mainly includes works undertaken for maintaining proper condition of buildings, its services and works in ordinary use. The use for which buildings are designed is the main factor in determining the required standard of maintenance.

Restoration: It emphasizes the preservation of structures such as historic sites, houses, monuments, and other significant properties through careful maintenance and upkeep. Restoration aims to create accurate depictions of these locations and protect them against deterioration that could make them inaccessible or unrecognizable in the future.

Adaptation: means the ability to fit. Building adaptation in construction can be defined as an intervention to adjust any work done on a building above the intention of maintenance that brings changes in the capacity, the function and the performance of the building.

Reconstruction: in architectural conservation is the largely prototypical restoration of destroyed architectural monuments, historical buildings or parts of buildings. … The ICOMOS Burra Charter, defines « reconstruction » as the returning of a damaged building to a known earlier state by the introduction of new materials.

ANASTILOSIS: is an archaeological term that refers to reconstructing ruined buildings and monuments. The key to anastylosis is that, as far as is possible, the original architectural elements and materials are used to reassemble the structure.

RIPRISTINARE: To make the building as it was in the first time.
